Medical Needs 2010 and 2009
[Link to 2009]

The provision of medical attention can be life-changing for an orphan. Hope's Heart strives to help orphans overcome physical challenges through surgeries [cleft lip/palate, heart, hernia, eye, etc], clubbed feet casting, blood transfusions, physical therapy, hearing aids, and other procedures that will correct a physical challenge or improve their quality of life.  Medical grants may also provide urgently needed medications or medical equipment.

2010 Medical Projects

Three Cleft Surgeries

January 2010- We begin the year with three new cleft lip surgery sponsorships.   Anton, Ellie and  Harrison will be receiving surgery over the next couple months...as soon as they are healthy and strong enough.  This life changing surgery will result in improvement in their eating as well as helping prevent future digestive and hearing challenges.

2009 Medical Projects

Club Foot Casting

December 2009-  Wonderful results are realized for babies born with clubbed feet when bracing and casting is received.  Timmy is getting ready to begin this process at a home where he will receive attention to this special need.  We look with anticipation at how the process will help correct the curviture in his legs/feet.

Heart Surgery

December 2009- Many orphans have been identified as needing urgent medical attention.  Little Henry is one of them.  Because of serious heart issures, Henry will soon need surgery.  We are grateful to play a part in making this surgery possible.  Please join us in praying for this little guy.

January 2010 UPDATE- Henry is recovering from heart surgery.  He is eating and getting stronger each day.

Cleft Surgery

December 2009-
We are ending 2009 with one more cleft surgery sponsorship.  Shortly after the first of the new year, Paul should be ready for his cleft lip surgery.   We look with hope to the wonderful difference the surgery will make for this special little boy.

January 2010 UPDATE-  Paul's bilateral cleft lip was quite complex, but he has had a successful surgery.  He is on the way to recovery and a better life because of it.

Two Heart Surgeries

October 2009-
Precious little one-year-old Morgan has been gifted with the funding for heart surgery.  Her complex heart surgery has just been completed.  We pray for a quick and full recovery.

November 2009- Austin was in critical need of a complicated heart surgery.  We were so grateful to hear the surgery went well and he is in ICU recovering.

December UPDATE- Both Morgan and Austin have been released from their respective hospitals.  We rejoice in this new chance of life they have been given.

January 2010 UPDATE- Sadly, health complications resulted in the tragic loss of Austin life.  We were honored to get to know this special little boy and to give him a chance at a long life.  Today he rests in the arms of Jesus.

February 2010 UPDATE-  Morgan is doing well after surgery. She will continue to be closely monitored.

Two Cleft Surgeries

September 2009-
Babies Jo and Emma await their turn for cleft lip surgery.  In the coming weeks they will continue to grow stong and healthy enough for the surgery.  It is a joy to provide the financial resources for their medical care.

November UPDATE-
Jo has had her cleft surgery, been discharged from the hospital, and is recovering well.

December UPDATE-
Emma has had her successful cleft surgery!

Orthopedic Surgery

September 2009- Born with a malformed leg, this little guy is facing some major challenges.  Specialists have determined an amputation of his leg below the knee is the best solution for future ability to walk and run.  Chip just underwent this surgery.  His leg will remain casted for six weeks.  After healing, he will be fitted for a prosthetic leg.

Spinal Surgery

Surgery for Abdominal Obstruction

September UPDATE-  After a long and complicated surgery, Erin is resting and recovering.  She has resumed drinking her formula.  She is receiving careful attention to her wound.

A Second Hip Surgery

August 2009-
In November 2008, Jin had hip surgery to correct a dislocated hip.  Now, seven months later, she is scheduled to have a second surgery to remove the pins which were placed in her hip last year to enforce the hip joint.

August UPDATE- Jin is through a successful surgery.  She is on bed rest and no weight bearing for 4 weeks.  Then she will begin learning to walk.  The doctor is pleased with the results.

December UPDATE- Jin's incision has healed well. She is learning how to walk and has made much progress with that.  She is eating well and is healthy.

Surgery

July 2009- Baby Melody was born with a meningocele, a growth on the back of her head.  Funding will cover the cost of the surgery.

September UPDATE- Melody is growing in health and strength as she prepares for surgery.  She enjoys her milk and is sitting up with the help of some pillow props.

November UPDATE- Despite some serious concerns from the surgeons, Melody's surgery this month went smoothly and she is recovering nicely.

Therapy to Hear

July 2009-
Three year old Shanna was born deaf and recently received cochlear implants to help her hear for the first time.  Funding is helping provide  Shanna's speech therapy and hearing monitoring for the next months as she goes through the gradual process of learning to hear, speak, and adjust to the new sounds around her.

October UPDATE- Shanna is doing well with her speech therapy.  She is able to hear and understand simple words.  She is very cooperative and concentrates on her hearing and speaking.

January 2010 UPDATE-  Shanna has joined her new family through adoption!

Surgeries

July 2009-
Two year old Hope is one of the children we sponsor monthly for foster care.  We continue to assist in her needs by providing for surgery to separate Hope's fused fingers.  This procedure will aid in improved functioning of her hand.

July 2009- A birth defect resulted in Lan needing a colostomy just a couple days after birth.  Now, at seven months,  she is ready for a corrective surgery [second stage anal atresia].

August UPDATE-  After a complicated surgery, Hope spent some additional time in the hospital, but is now back to her foster home.  Her bandaged hand will continue to heal.

September UPDATE- Lan has had her surgery and was discharged from the hospital.  She is being watched carefully and will require yet another surgery in about six months.

Surgery

July 2009-  Sophie has struggled since birth with a defect that interferes with her digestive system.  We have joined others in funding this much needed surgery.  We hope to soon have news of a successful surgery and recovery.

July UPDATE-  Sophie has received her surgery and has been discharged from the hospital.

September UPDATE- Two months since surgery, Sophie's is recovering well and has had no infections.  She is eating well and has gained some weight.

September UPDATE- Li  had a smooth going cleft lip repair surgery this month.

Corrections of Hands and Feet Curviture

September UPDATE- Treatment for Lance began first on his hands, and nice progress is being made.  Plans are being made for treatments on his feet once the hands are completed.

Clubbed Feet Casting

May 2009-
Every child deserves to receive the medical treatment she/he is needing to assure them of the best future possible.  This month we are excited to fund Kaleb's clubbed feet casting.  In just a few months we expect to see a tranformation that will allow Kaleb full use of his feet for the activity level a little guy needs.

June Update- As you can see, Kaleb has his colorful casting on his legs and feet.  He is managing well with them.  This is the first step to full correction of the curviture of his feet and legs.

October UPDATE- Kaleb casting treatments have continued and improvement is being seen.  The casts are now off and he is wearing a brace.  The goal is to get his legs in the best possible position.

April/May 2009Beautiful little Livia, Pamela and Susan are being carefully cared for as they prepare for surgery to repair their cleft lip.  It is an honor to help fund their upcoming surgeries, giving each of these baby girls a chance at a healthier and happier life.  We will keep you posted as their surgery is scheduled and completed.

June UPDATE-  Pamela and Susan are both  just out of surgery.  The surgeries went well.  Within a few days they will be discharged and spend the next few months recovering.

Cleft Lip Sponsorship

January 2009-  Our first medical sponsorship in 2009 is for little Kai's cleft lip surgery.  This life changing procedure will make a remarkable difference in his life.... including the areas of growth and development, digestion, speech, hearing and other related arenas.  We are so grateful to our donors for serving Kai and children like him through your generous support.  Thank you.

March UPDATE-  Babies who are cleft affected and reside in instituitons are at a high risk of failure to thrive.  Sadly, this little boy died before being able to receive his cleft surgery.  His life was short, and he will be remembered fondly.

Carryover from 2008

January 2009-  Several children who were sponsored for medical projects funded in late 2008 await  arrangements being made that will serve their need.  Each one can be viewed for more details on the 2008 medical page.  We will provide updates as they become available.

Cleft surgery for Jing [2008 link]
Heart catherization for Hope [2008 link]
Prosthetic leg/foot for Bing [2008 link]
Blood transfusions for Gui [2008 link]
Atresia surgery for Xue [2008 link]

January 2009 UPDATE- Bing will soon be running and playing again.  He just received his new prosthetic leg/foot.  What a tremendous gift to bring mobility and activity back into his world.  We express our deepest appreciation to the Stow family for hosting a fund raiser on Bing's behalf.

January 2009 UPDATESJing's struggles with health are keeping her from receiving cleft surgery for now.  As she recovers and becomes stronger the surgery will be rescheduled.

Xue's condition has stabilized and she remains hospitalized after fighting infection issues.

Hope is too weak to be transported for a heart catherization.  We pray she will regain strength and health enough to undergo the procedure.

March UPDATE- Jing has had her cleft surgery and did very well.    Sadly, Hope died before receiving heart treatment.  We mourn the loss of her life.  Gui has been receiving tranfusions twice each month.  These are helping to stabilize his blood levels.

May UPDATE- Wonderful news.  Gui was adopted this month and has joined his forever family.
